Understanding Orthotics: What Are They?

An orthotic is a special shoe insert that can be used to treat various foot conditions, as well as support abnormal foot movement. There are many different types available, varying in material and features based on who has made them and what sort of condition you suffer from. In fact, orthotics have been used to treat foot pain and improve comfort for more than 100 years now. The materials and theory behind them have evolved and changed over time, but the idea remains the same. At Doubleview Podiatry, we aim to provide orthotic treatment that is based on the latest evidence to provide you with a solution best suited to your individual needs.

Which Conditions may Benefit from Orthotics?

Heel pain

This encompasses conditions like heel pain, plantar fasciitis, arch pain, metatarsalgia, and overall discomfort in tired, achy feet. Custom orthotics are designed to relieve pressure points and promote natural foot function, effectively reducing your discomfort.

Injuries

This covers chronic ankle sprains, arthritic conditions, bursitis, tendonitis, trauma, and fractures. Wearing a custom orthotic has been known to speed up injury recovery, as well as decrease the chance of re-injury in the future.

Forefoot pain

Pain experienced on the top of the foot can have several causes, with the most common being overuse from activities such as extensive running, jumping, and kicking (such as extensor tendonitis). Tight-fitting shoes can also be a contributing factor to forefoot pain.

Flat Feet

For some individuals, flat feet can result in discomfort in the feet, legs, and lower back, hampering their ability to stand, walk, and carry out everyday tasks. Tight tendons, congenital or injury-related bony deformities, and obesity are among the factors that can contribute to flat feet.

Arthritic Conditions

For individuals dealing with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other arthritic conditions, customised orthotics play a crucial role. These orthotics are designed to be soft, gentle, and accommodating, offering both shock absorption and gait abnormality control.

Children and Orthotics

Certain children may exhibit tendencies such as in-toeing, out-toeing, excessive foot pronation, or various developmental issues, including growing pains or frequent tripping/falling. To evaluate their condition, your podiatrist will consider their age, medical history, family history, activity level, any history of trauma, symptoms, and gait. Custom foot orthotics may be a viable solution, either in the short or long term, depending on the circumstances. Our recommendation for orthotics is made only when it’s truly necessary for your child.

Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and there are many other conditions that custom orthotics can assist with. If you’re uncertain whether orthotics are suitable for your needs, we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment with a podiatrist for a thorough evaluation and an open conversation about the potential advantages.

The Zebris Gait Analysis System

When you experience foot pain, especially in the arch, you likely thought you needed more cushioning. A softer sole or more cushioning feels great initially, but it doesn’t address the underlying issue causing the foot pain. This is often where people looking to invest in orthotics make mistakes. Knowing which orthotic you need and using our Zebris Gait Analysis system will save you from wasting money and living with more pain. Based on the highest quality German technology and engineering, the Zebris Gait Analysis system features more than 30,000 pressure sensors embedded in the base of a treadmill. Combined with two cameras (one positioned on the side and the other behind), the system records an extremely accurate and objective analysis of every step you take. This information is then used to help diagnose and treat misalignments and asymmetries, and to assist in a rehabilitation plan (including the creation of custom foot orthotics).

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom vs. Over-the-Counter Orthotics: What Sets Them Apart?

Custom orthotics are personalised inserts crafted to fit within your shoes, addressing various foot conditions and pathologies. They are meticulously tailored to your unique foot anatomy. Manufacturing custom orthotics requires capturing an exact replica of your foot. While traditional plaster casts were used in the past, modern technology employs 3D cameras and comprehensive biomechanical assessments for this purpose. In contrast, over-the-counter orthotics are mass-produced and available for purchase off the shelf. They are designed to accommodate a standard foot shape and typically fit based on shoe size or require trimming to match your needs. While they offer some degree of cushioning, their lack of customisation makes it unlikely that they can effectively address the root causes of your foot condition. Although custom orthotics may entail a higher initial cost, their superior effectiveness as therapeutic devices justifies the investment over non-custom orthotics.

Will I get the same results from all orthotics?

In short, no. Orthotic shells come in a variety of materials and can be paired with numerous top covers. When it comes to prescribing your orthotics, your podiatrist considers your individual needs and the specific condition you’re dealing with to guarantee your ongoing comfort.

Do my orthotics need to be worn forever?

Whether you need to wear orthotics indefinitely or for a shorter duration depends on your unique circumstances and the specific conditions you’re dealing with. Your podiatrist will address this question when crafting your customised treatment plan, tailored to your individual needs.

What Is the Expected Lifespan of Orthotics, and Do They Require Regular Check-ups?

The duration for which your orthotics remain effective can be influenced by various factors. The degree of force applied to your orthotics is inversely related to their longevity. Additionally, the wear patterns of orthotic materials can vary based on their molecular properties. This is why we suggest an annual evaluation of your custom orthotics to ensure they maintain their original functionality.

How are orthotic insoles made?

The creation of custom orthotics involves a comprehensive process. After your podiatrist has determined the need for custom-made orthotics to address your specific concern and has completed the diagnostic phase to pinpoint the precise type of orthotic required, the manufacturing process swings into action. At Doubleview Podiatry, we utilise advanced 3D camera technology to capture the unique structure of your feet. This digital image is subsequently transmitted as a digital file to our orthotic laboratory in WA. In the laboratory, CadCam technology takes center stage as it meticulously crafts your customised device, adhering to the exact foot contours specified in your podiatrist’s prescription. To complete the orthotic, soft top covers, usually of a gentle nature, are applied.

How long for orthotics to be made?

Considering the intricacies involved, the production of orthotics is remarkably quick. In most cases, the standard turnaround time for orthotics is one week, but in unique situations, this can be expedited to just 2 days. If you have an urgent need for orthotics, we recommend discussing your situation with your podiatrist.

Meet Daniel Ryan

My experience in the field of podiatry has consistently highlighted the significant benefits associated with custom orthotic prescriptions. Through the amalgamation of video footage, pressure analysis, and biomechanical evaluation, I have achieved exceptional results by tailoring custom orthotics as an essential component of clients’ rehabilitation regimens. Orthotics assume a central role in comprehensive treatment plans, enabling the correction of biomechanical deficiencies, pain reduction, and the restoration of physical activity. Beyond my professional involvement, I have personally relied on orthotics to overcome various foot and lower limb injuries, allowing me to empathise with the patient’s point of view.
