What exactly are orthotics?

Orthotics are a special type of shoe insert designed to address a wide range of foot conditions and provide support for irregular foot movement. These inserts come in various forms, with variations in materials and features influenced by the manufacturer and the specific foot condition you are dealing with. Remarkably, orthotics have been used for over a century to alleviate foot pain and enhance comfort. While the materials and theories have evolved over time, the core concept remains constant. At Doubleview Podiatry, our approach to orthotic treatment is founded on the latest evidence, ensuring that we provide you with a solution tailored to your unique needs.

What conditions may orthotics help?

Heel pain

This addresses issues such as heel pain, plantar fasciitis, arch pain, metatarsalgia, and the general fatigue and soreness of your feet. Custom orthotics are tailored to alleviate pressure in high-stress areas and restore your feet’s natural functionality, ultimately reducing pain.

Injuries

This addresses conditions like chronic ankle sprains, arthritic conditions, bursitis, tendonitis, trauma, and fractures. The use of custom orthotics has been proven to assist injury recovery and lower the likelihood of re-injury.

Forefoot pain

Pain on the top of the foot can be caused by several conditions, the most common of which are due to overuse from excessive running, jumping, and kicking (such as extensor tendonitis). Forefoot pain can also be caused by tight-fitting shoes.

Flat Feet

Flat feet can be the source of foot, leg, and lower back pain for certain individuals. This can severely limit their capacity to stand, walk, and engage in daily activities. Factors such as tight tendons, congenital or injury-related bony deformities, and obesity can all play a role in the development of flat feet.

Arthritic Conditions

Individuals with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and various arthritic conditions often require orthotics that are softer, gentler, and designed to accommodate their specific needs. These orthotics offer shock absorption while effectively managing gait irregularities.

Children and Orthotics

A number of children may exhibit traits such as in-toeing, out-toeing, excessive foot pronation, or various developmental issues, including growing pains or frequent tripping/falling. To determine the best course of action, your podiatrist will consider factors such as their age, medical history, family history, activity level, any history of trauma, symptoms, and gait. Custom foot orthotics may be recommended as part of the solution, whether for the short term or long term, based on the unique situation. Rest assured, we only propose orthotics when they are absolutely necessary for your child.

It’s essential to understand that this list does not cover all the conditions that custom orthotics can address. If you’re contemplating whether orthotics are right for you, arrange an appointment with a podiatrist. During this assessment, you can be assessed and learn about the possible benefits tailored to your feet.

The Zebris Gait Analysis System

When you experience foot pain, especially in the arch, you likely thought you needed more cushioning. A softer sole or more cushioning feels great initially, but it doesn’t address the underlying issue causing the foot pain. This is often where people looking to invest in orthotics make mistakes. Knowing which orthotic you need and using our Zebris Gait Analysis system will save you from wasting money and living with more pain. Based on the highest quality German technology and engineering, the Zebris Gait Analysis system features more than 30,000 pressure sensors embedded in the base of a treadmill. Combined with two cameras (one positioned on the side and the other behind), the system records an extremely accurate and objective analysis of every step you take. This information is then used to help diagnose and treat misalignments and asymmetries, and to assist in a rehabilitation plan (including the creation of custom foot orthotics).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do custom orthotics compare to over the counter orthotics?

Custom orthotics are tailor-made inserts designed to be placed inside your shoes, intended for managing a wide range of foot conditions and pathologies. These orthotics are meticulously crafted to precisely match the unique contours of your feet. The process of creating custom orthotics involves capturing an exact replica of your foot. While traditional plaster casts were used in the past, modern technology now utilises 3D cameras and comprehensive biomechanical assessments for this purpose. In contrast, over-the-counter orthotics are commercially available and can be bought off the shelf. They are designed to accommodate a standardised foot shape, typically relying on shoe size or necessitating adjustments to fit your specific requirements. While over-the-counter orthotics provide some cushioning, their lack of customisation makes it unlikely that they can effectively address the underlying causes of your foot condition. Although custom orthotics may involve a higher initial expense, their superior therapeutic effectiveness justifies the investment compared to non-custom orthotics.

Will I get the same results from all orthotics?

In a nutshell, no. Orthotic shells can be crafted from diverse materials and may feature different types of top covers. When your podiatrist prescribes orthotics, they take into account your individual requirements and the specific condition you’re addressing to ensure your ongoing comfort.

Do I need to wear my orthotics forever?

Whether you need to wear orthotics indefinitely or for a shorter duration depends on your unique circumstances and the specific conditions you’re dealing with. Your podiatrist will address this question when crafting your customised treatment plan, tailored to your individual needs.

What’s the Lifespan of My Orthotics, and Should They Be Regularly Checked?

The duration for which your orthotics remain effective can be influenced by various factors. The degree of force applied to your orthotics is inversely related to their longevity. Additionally, the wear patterns of orthotic materials can vary based on their molecular properties. This is why we suggest an annual evaluation of your custom orthotics to ensure they maintain their original functionality.

How are orthotic insoles made?

The creation of custom orthotics involves a meticulous procedure. Once your podiatrist has determined that custom orthotics are necessary to address your specific concern and has completed the diagnostic phase to identify the precise type of orthotic required, the manufacturing process commences. Here at Doubleview Podiatry, we employ a 3D camera to capture the unique structure of your feet. This digital image is then transmitted to our orthotic laboratory in WA. At the laboratory, CadCam technology is employed to meticulously fashion your customised device in accordance with the exact contours of your feet, as specified by your podiatrist’s prescription. Finally, soft top covers are typically applied to provide the finishing touch to the orthotic.

What’s the timeframe for making orthotics?

Considering the intricacies involved, the production of orthotics is remarkably quick. In most cases, the standard turnaround time for orthotics is one week, but in unique situations, this can be expedited to just 2 days. If you have an urgent need for orthotics, we recommend discussing your situation with your podiatrist.

Meet Daniel Ryan

My tenure in the field of podiatry has consistently demonstrated the remarkable benefits that custom orthotic prescriptions can yield. Through the integration of video footage, pressure analysis, and biomechanical assessments, I have achieved exceptional outcomes by tailoring custom orthotics as an integral part of clients’ rehabilitation programs. Orthotics play a pivotal role in comprehensive treatment strategies, addressing biomechanical deficiencies, mitigating pain, and facilitating a return to physical activity. Additionally, I have personally utilised orthotics to overcome several foot and lower limb injuries throughout my life, affording me a unique understanding of the patient’s perspective.
